Terms of Service - mug
Effective date: 2026-05-24
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of mug ("mug", the "App", "we", "us", or "our"). By downloading, accessing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms.
If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.

2) About mug
mug is a vocabulary learning app focused on daily word discovery, short exercises, progress tracking, boxes, shelves, and the Mugidex collection system.
The App is provided for general educational and personal enrichment purposes. We try to keep vocabulary content useful and accurate, but we do not guarantee that every word, definition, example, category, difficulty level, or explanation is complete, accurate, or up to date.
mug does not guarantee a specific learning result, exam result, fluency level, or improvement in vocabulary. Your progress depends on how you use the App and on factors outside our control.
3) Eligibility
mug is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13, or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction.
If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the App only with permission from a parent or legal guardian. The parent or guardian is responsible for the minor's use of the App.
4) No account and local-first use
mug does not require account creation in its current version. Core progress, learning state, collection state, shelves, streaks, and settings are primarily stored locally on your device.
Because the App is local-first, deleting the App, resetting your device, or clearing local data may permanently delete your progress unless iOS or another backup mechanism restores it. We are not responsible for progress lost because local device data is deleted, corrupted, migrated incorrectly, or not backed up.
Some features require internet access, including downloading vocabulary content, checking subscription entitlement status, opening web links, and sending support messages.
5) License to use the App
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for your personal, non-commercial use.
If you downloaded mug from Apple's App Store, your license is also limited to use on Apple-branded products that you own or control and as permitted by Apple's applicable usage rules, including Family Sharing where Apple allows it.
We reserve all rights not expressly granted to you in these Terms.
6) Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the App in a way that violates any applicable law, regulation, or third-party right;
- copy, modify, distribute, sell, lease, sublicense, or commercially exploit the App or any part of it except where expressly permitted by law;
- reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to extract the App's source code except where applicable law gives you a non-waivable right to do so;
- circumvent paywalls, subscription checks, access controls, quotas, reward rules, or technical restrictions;
- use bots, scripts, scraping, automated requests, or similar methods to overload, copy, manipulate, or interfere with the App or its backend services;
- attempt to gain unauthorized access to systems, data, accounts, infrastructure, or third-party services connected to the App;
- use the App to create, transmit, or support unlawful, harmful, abusive, or misleading activity.
7) Vocabulary content
Vocabulary content may include words, definitions, examples, categories, difficulty levels, parts of speech, and related educational information. Content may come from our own databases, public sources, licensed sources, or service providers.
Vocabulary content is not legal, medical, financial, professional, or academic advice. You should not rely on mug as your only source for high-stakes language, translation, academic, or professional decisions.
We may correct, remove, replace, or update vocabulary content at any time.
8) Boxes, mugs, shelves, Mugidex, and virtual items
mug includes collection features such as boxes, mugs, shelves, cards, rarity levels, Mugidex progress, badges, rewards, and related virtual items or progress indicators.
Virtual items and collection progress are part of the App experience. They are licensed to you for personal use inside the App only. They are not your property, have no cash value, cannot be redeemed for money or real-world goods, and cannot be sold, transferred, traded, exchanged, or used outside the App.
Boxes and rewards may use random or probability-based mechanics. Receiving a specific mug, rarity, card, or reward is not guaranteed. We may adjust reward rules, probabilities, rarity distribution, collection size, missions, streak rules, and progression systems over time.
In the current product design, boxes are earned through app use, daily rewards, exercises, missions, or premium benefits. They are not designed as cash-out gambling products. You must not attempt to sell, trade, or monetize mugs, boxes, or Mugidex progress.
If your local data is deleted, reset, corrupted, or not restored after changing devices, collection progress may be lost.
9) Free features, limits, and premium features
mug may offer both free and paid features. Free users can access core vocabulary learning and collection features, subject to limits shown in the App.
Premium features may include additional shelf capacity, premium daily exercise rewards, personalization options, enhanced vocabulary details, or other features shown in the App. The exact premium features and limits may change over time.
Current product rules may include a limited number of shelf slots for free users and expanded capacity for premium users. If your premium access expires, your existing collection is not intentionally deleted, but premium-only capacity, rewards, personalization, or interactions may become locked until you renew, free space, or otherwise comply with the active free-plan limits.
10) mug+ subscription
mug may offer an auto-renewable subscription called mug+ or a similar premium plan. Subscription options, duration, prices, trial terms if any, and included benefits are shown in the App before purchase.
Billing and renewal
- Purchases are processed by Apple through your Apple ID / Apple Account and StoreKit. We do not process your payment card information.
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID / Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before the end of the current subscription period, according to Apple's subscription rules.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account subscription settings.
- If you cancel, premium access normally continues until the end of the paid period.
- If Apple cannot process payment, if a purchase is refunded, or if entitlement verification fails, premium access may be suspended or removed.
Price changes, refunds, and entitlement
- Prices and available subscription plans may change. Apple's rules for notice, consent, renewal, and price changes apply.
- Refund requests for App Store purchases are handled by Apple under Apple's policies. We cannot guarantee that Apple will grant a refund.
- Premium access is based on the active subscription entitlement reported by Apple. If there is a mismatch between local app state and Apple's entitlement status, Apple's entitlement status controls.
- You are responsible for cancelling a subscription you no longer want. Deleting the App does not necessarily cancel the subscription.
11) Apple App Store terms
If you downloaded mug from Apple's App Store, the following additional terms apply:
- These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. We are solely responsible for the App and its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support services for the App.
- To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no warranty obligation for the App. If the App fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price, if any, according to Apple's rules. Apple will have no other warranty obligation to the maximum extent permitted by law.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing claims relating to the App, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to comply with legal or regulatory requirements, and claims under consumer protection, privacy, or similar laws.
- If a third party claims that the App or your possession and use of the App infringes that party's intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling, and discharging that claim to the extent required by law.
- You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country or region subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country or region, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must comply with applicable third-party terms when using the App.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms for App Store downloads and may enforce these Terms against you.
Your use of mug may also be subject to Apple's applicable terms, including the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions and Apple's standard end-user license agreement if no separate custom EULA applies.
12) Third-party services
The App may rely on third-party services, including Apple / StoreKit for distribution and in-app purchases, Supabase for backend vocabulary content, PostHog for product analytics, email providers for support, and website hosting providers.
Third-party services are governed by their own terms and policies. We are not responsible for third-party services except where applicable law says otherwise.
13) Support and communications
You can contact us at mail@trymug.com for support. We try to respond to reasonable support requests, but we do not guarantee a specific response time or that every issue can be fixed.
If you contact us, you are responsible for making sure the information you provide is accurate and that you have the right to share it.
14) Feedback
If you send us feedback, ideas, suggestions, bug reports, or feature requests, you grant us a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free right to use, copy, modify, publish, and otherwise exploit that feedback for any purpose, without compensation to you, unless prohibited by law.
15) Intellectual property
The App, including its software, interface, design, text, graphics, logos, icons, animations, product names, branding, and other materials, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual property and other laws.
Except for the limited license granted above, these Terms do not transfer any ownership rights to you.
If you believe content in the App infringes your rights, contact mail@trymug.com with enough detail for us to review the issue, including the content at issue, the right you claim, and the action you request.
16) Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains how data is handled when you use the App. By using mug, you acknowledge that we process data as described in the Privacy Policy.
17) Updates, changes, and availability
We may update, modify, suspend, or discontinue the App or any feature, content, limit, reward rule, collection mechanic, subscription benefit, or backend service at any time.
We do not guarantee that the App will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or available at all times. Features may be unavailable because of maintenance, network issues, App Store review delays, backend problems, device compatibility, legal requirements, or other reasons.
18) Termination
You may stop using the App at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access to the App or certain features if you materially breach these Terms, misuse the App, create legal risk, interfere with the App, or where required by law or platform rules.
Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including intellectual property, virtual item restrictions, disclaimers, limitation of liability, governing law, and dispute-related provisions.
19) Disclaimer of warranties
THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE".
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, availability, and reliability.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain disclaimers. Nothing in these Terms limits rights that you cannot legally waive.
20) Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, progress, virtual items, profits, revenue, business, goodwill, or opportunities.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to the App or these Terms is limited to the greater of: (a) the amount you paid for the App or mug+ in the 12 months before the claim; or (b) the minimum amount that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including mandatory consumer protections.
21) Governing law and consumer rights
These Terms are governed by the laws of France, excluding conflict-of-law rules.
If you are a consumer in the European Union, United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection rules, you may have rights that cannot be waived by contract. These Terms do not limit those mandatory rights.
Where required by mandatory law, you may be able to bring claims in the courts of your country or region of residence.
22) Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will update the effective date and make the updated Terms available in the App and/or on the website.
By continuing to use the App after updated Terms become effective, you agree to the updated Terms. If you do not agree, stop using the App and cancel any subscription you no longer want through Apple's subscription settings.
